.) The thinning curls, the sagging jowl, the three deep horizontal grooves in his forehead crossed with two vertical diagonals give him a kindness that is vital to the grieving avenger. And, with or without any outside knowledge of his inner demons, he is very believable when wroth. He wears the role well. The detective work — the misinformed first assumption is that the detective himself was the intended target — is vigorous and followable, and it offers a fair share of ah-ha moments. (Worthwhile one: the lock of the daughter’s hair snipped on the coroner’s hunk later reads as radioactive on the Geiger counter in her special effects.) If the investigation depends overmuch on bullish Spotted Harry tactics to move it along, it at least pulls up short of the overscaled effect — the outrageous chases, the explosions, the Hong Kong struggle — that has so numbed the contemporary action film. Thanks mainly to the scale, it’s a sufficient thrill when Gibson simply unholsters and cuts general with his sidearm. Thanks secondarily, right before that, to the alarming stirring of Caterina Scorsone at a secret roadside assignation, and to the suddenness of the interference of that meeting, and thanks in general to the self-effacing professionalism of pilot Martin Campbell and cameraman Phil Meheux.

It was a small puzzling to have an empty bowl with what appeared to be creme fraiche set upon the columnar list, but then the server produced a little pitcher of soup to let out tableside. It may seem like a modern conceit, but have you ever tried carrying a hot wheel of soup across a crowded room? It also kept the butternut squash soup rigorous and hot. The "creme fraiche" was chai chantilly, and the soup was garnished with toasted seeds, and fried judicious. The soup was light, not weighted down with heavy cream or fierce spicing, a perfect comfort for a chilly evening.

Another starter was Albacore tuna with tomato mousse, avocado, and ponzu onions. As routine with Joachim Spichal restaurants, the tuna was fresh and of paraphernalia quality. The creaminess of the avocado nicely offset the tuna and the microgreens added a dash of grassiness.

We did not try the third starter, Wild arugula salad with Chevre, Marcona almonds, and Sherry gastrique because it was valid too dang cold for salad. But I'm certain a vegetarian or supermodel would have been appreciative (although the supermodel might have picked out the cheese and asked for the gastrique on the side).
