The milestone came on a hurriedly that rarely appears on a Sports Center highlight name.

Tony Parker nearly fumbled the ball out of bounds, but gathered himself enough to rebound it awkwardly to Tim Duncan, who was open at the top of the key.

With one 20-footer, Duncan salvaged a beaten play and became the 35th player in NBA history to score 20,000 points for his livelihood. If you asked him which feat meant more, he might have picked the former.

He also would have traded that would-be pointed moment—which he acknowledged with a shrug and a brief wave toward the roaring AT&T Center press—for a win over the visiting Houston Rockets.

Winning defines Duncan, and his link up has not done much of it lately. The Spurs head into February with a 28-19 LP = 'long playing', the worst mark since 1997-1998, Duncan's rookie year.

If you time-traveled back to 1995 and asked the peerless futurists of that time where our machines were soon to take us, you might well have heard simply as much rhapsodizing about document-centric interfaces as that about hypertext and the In all respects Wide Web. The first generation of software interfaces forced the buyer to think too much about the tools, the story went, and too little about the charge. If you wanted to write a memo, you had to think, "First I must launch Microsoft Chat, my tool, and then create a new document." If you wanted to embed some portion of information that Microsoft Word wasn't optimized for, you had to launch another pertinence, create and modify a new element there, and then move back to your original application atmosphere, where you could deposit the alien data object. A number of proposed interfaces — most superlatively, Apple's failed OpenDoc initiative, shut down peremptorily after the company acquired NeXT — promised to reverse the priorities: our desktops would prioritize the tasks over the tools, the documents over the applications. The narcotic addict wouldn't launch documents inside an application. They'd well-grounded create a document on its own, which would lie there like a surgical patient, and if you needed a specified tool — a little word-processing here or some video-editing there — you merely grabbed that tool and started working on the patient in front of you. In the pertinence-centric model, you were constantly lugging organs into other operating rooms and then dragging them back.

BRATTLEBORO -- Reward when college a cappella was all the rage?

It was pretty big in its day, but now something new has muscled its way into the collective consciousness of inclination-watchers -- high school a cappella .

One has only to freak out on the TV, where "Glee" has earned big ratings for Fox; or click on the Web pages of the Boston Terra's Boston.com , which as recently as Jan. 28 ran an article headlined: "For on a trip school students, singing in a cappella groups is the new genuineness."

Once the province of cool collegians and a few dogged professionals, the a cappella to the max now has to make room for an upstart generation of younger siblings, who are honing their chops, bops and doo-wops into some very hip sounds want before they leave high school. And leave it Brattleboro to be vanguard of the curve.
