The new face of cosmetics giant Lancôme isn’t one of those girls who’ll bustle out to the opening of an envelope. Julia Roberts cemented her A-roster status in the '90s, yet has maintained it admirably even as each new generation of actresses comes through. Julia keeps her ancestor high by limiting her public appearances to a minimum, preferring to pay out her time as a hands-on mum-of-three. 

Neither is she someone we associate with the trowel manner to putting make-up on. Last time we saw her (at the Golden Globes, looking nonchalant in vintage YSL ) it was her beaming smile we noticed, rather than her make-up. She’s more of a true-look lady. She even seemed, if not surprised, perhaps appreciative of her new position, saying, 'It's sort of like every girl's dream: to be 42 and have three kids and be a working mom, it's a major moment to be asked to do this and to be able to do it. I think it says a lot about Lancôme and what they stick out for.'

McVeigh leads Irish bid in Portugal  

EIGHT Irish players are included in the applicants for the 80th Portuguese International Ladies Amateur Open Championship which begins at the Oceanico O’Connor Ambit, in the Algarve, Portugal, on Saturday.

This championship marks the start of the 2010 women’s cosmopolitan season in Europe and is sure to be tightly contested as many of the 2010 Britain and Ireland Curtis Cup panel will contend in a bid for selection on the team, which will be announced in late April.

Danielle McVeigh from Earl Co Down Ladies Golf Club, the 2009 Ladies British Disclose Amateur Strokeplay and Welsh Open Strokeplay defend will lead the Irish challenge and will be joined by Gillian O’Leary from Cork, who won the Portuguese legend in 2004, Aedin Murphy, Sarah Cunningham, Louise Mernagh, Victoria Bradshaw, Maria Dunne and Ciara Butler.

Clinique’s Juiced Up Tone range is colourful, yet wearable, and has the bonus of being filled to the gunwales with vitamins and antioxidants. The eyeshadows include pear and berry shades, which give a shimmery bath of colour, and the Vitamin C Lip Smoothie in Rhubarbie adds a eye-popping slug of colour.

The fruity theme recurs in Guerlain’s Cherry Blossom. Its ingenious director, Olivier Echaudemaison, has designed a collection that gives cheeks and lips a rosy, doll-like tinge. “La vie en rose with an oriental understanding”, as he describes the look, may sound bewildering, but makes atmosphere once you’ve tried out the colours. The pinky peach blusher mirrors the dull of a Japanese cherry tree. The soft colours suitable most skin tones, especially the blusher, which adds a radiance to pale winter complexions.

Bobbi Brown’s Cabaña Corals, its new array of vibrant orange shades, may look terrifying, but it is wearable. I was unconvinced at first, but found the California Coral Pot Rouge gave my cheeks a smart, beachy glow. The range contains lip and cheek colours in every intimation of coral – you’re bound to succumb in love with at least one.
