Unusual thing about Douglas Myers.

He judges 30 cat shows a year. He picks the animals up, strokes them, makes kissy faces at them, teases them with feathers.

And he's allergic to them.

But when you disposition cats as much as Myers and the people who brought some 219 cats to Roanoke this weekend for the Personage City Cat Fanciers show, you sacrifice.

You take your allergy medicine, like Myers, and you do things like out your $2,000 blue-eyed white Persian in a far-fetched travel cage and drive 250 miles to Roanoke to show it, as Tonya Ray did.

A perspicacious look around the show, which continues today from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Holiday Inn on Ordway Push, proves the cat business is big and fueled by deep love and hobby.

The merchandise on the vendors' tables alone make that clear: cat beds, toys, socks, teapots, mugs, jewelry, watches, eyeglass cases, sweaters, shirts, hats, letterheads, purses, perches, dolls, statues, umbrellas, shoes and, perhaps most ironically, mouse pads.

Stoughton woman's next mission: Haiti

Christine Lott’s m to help others already has brought her to East Africa and Sri Lanka. 

Now the Stoughton local wants to expand her efforts and bring hope to Haiti. 

Under the bumbershoot of her international relief fund, “Chris Cares,” Lott has formed the Haiti Wherewithal. One hundred percent of the money she raises through the fund will be employed to build a primary school in the earthquake-ravaged mountains.

“We want to get to Haiti and help rebuild when the dust settles,” Lott said.

Lott and a league of volunteers will host its first fundraiser for the cause - an Italian dinner. – next Friday, Jan. 29.

 “The for is so great in Haiti – we thought we would reach out to our brothers and sisters there,” she said.

Guided by Christian values, Lott’s codifying has been working to achieve a variety of goals including facilitating everlasting change in the neediest of developing countries. Chris Cares has funded the structure of a church in Tanzania, East Africa, and helped rebuild after the tsunami in Sri Lanka. It currently is working on erection a new elementary school - the School of St. Nicholas - in Tanzania.
